DESCRIPTIONIn October 2008, the International Foundation deployed a survey to identify plan sponsors’ actions, opinions and responses in connection with pension plans and the economic downturn faced by the United States. This follow-up survey explores what has changed and what has stayed the same. Sponsors were asked what they believed were the major employment and benefit concerns of plan participants, and the extent to which participants believed the financial crisis would have a long-term impact. Defined benefit plan sponsors were asked if they have closed (or are considering closing) their plans to any employees and whether there have been any changes in the management and allocation of plan assets. Defined contribution plan sponsors were asked about any changes they have made with respect to employer matches and investment product offerings; they also report on actions participants are taking with respect to contribution levels, equity exposure, hardship withdrawals and borrowing retirement funds. The 1,305 survey respondents are managers, directors, administrative executives, trustees and professional advisors of U.S. pension plans. The survey findings are organized to reveal difference across employee benefit sectors: corporate plans, public and governmental plans, multiemployer plans and others with pension plans.
